In the town of Chinandega, Nicaragua, the Chinandega 2001 Foundation, Inc. owns and operates a home with programs for about 40 pregnant women who are about to deliver a baby. The local hospital will not admit the women unless they expect her to deliver within eight hours, and then she must leave the hospital the next day. Many poor women from outlying villages travel to Chinandega to deliver and stay at the Foundation’s home until they go into labor. If necessary, they can return to the home after they deliver.

2011 - Rotary Club of The Woodlands members
prepared Layettes
Rotary clubs around the nation work year round to assemble “Layette Bags” for these expecting mothers in Nicaragua. Each layette contains cloth diapers, newborn tee shirts, bath, hand and wash cloths, baby shampoo and soap, diaper rash ointment, cotton balls, receiving blankets, baby nail clippers, small manicure set and comb/brush for the mother and more, all packet into a large bag. Most importantly, these new supplies help mothers and their newborns survive those first crucial days of life.
2012 - 2013
Our goal was to purchase enough baby supplies to pack 100 layettes for expectant mothers of the 1300 women who use this home each year. With the support of District 5910, our Club Foundation and members, Interact club members, The Forum and Gulf Winds International we packet and shipped 125 layettes.
