THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
What is that Polio Eradication Picture?   World Polio Day will be celebrated on Polio Vaccine Pioneer Jonas Salk's Birthday, October 24, 2018.  See the endpolio.org site for more information. Our Rotary-wide
2018-19 Rotary Year Polio Fundraising Goal is $50 Million  to be Matched $2 for $1 by the Gates Foundation.

Much of the success in reducing the number of Polio cases in Pakistan is due to religious leaders like Imam Qari Mehboob.  He recently received a clock which, as a gift from the local Polio eradication team, emphasizes the importance of vaccinations and reminds parents why the Polio Vaccine is one of the best gifts that they can give their children.
Zero is the Magic Number!

The three-year Countdown to History starts after the final Wild Polio case.
Today, we count one week since the report of the most recent Wild Polio case.

Rotary After Hours- Come Join Us
Members of Rotary After Hours (RAH) are part of The Woodlands Rotary Club. The only difference is that they meet after hours from 5:00 - 6:15 pm the first and third Tuesday of the month. RAH is ideal for professionals that may not be able to attend the  our regular  Rotarian luncheons meetings.  Ideal members are community professionals that are highly motivated to be service oriented in giving back to the community with Rotary Club of The Woodlands. If you now someone who is interested in joining, invite them to our next RAH Meeting!

RAW Meetings are  also open to all Rotarians. So come out to have some fun. For Meeting Locations, visit our Club Calendar or  list of Upcoming Events on the web site.
Volunteer Opportunity: Serving Our Seniors Oct 20
The Rotary Club of The Woodlands is looking for volunteers to work with Interfaith of The Woodlands on Saturday, October 20, 2018 for the Serving Our Seniors day of work. We will be partnering up with local high school Interact clubs in these efforts. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in our community and provide various services to local senior citizens in need of assistance.

Interfaith asks that all volunteers arrive at 7:30am (on Saturday, October 20) at the following address:
4242 Interfaith Way
The Woodlands, TX 77381
Typically the work day lasts until noon, so it will not consume your entire Saturday. Volunteers will be expected to perform projects such as:
Yard Work
Painting
Cleaning
Gardening
Light Home Repair

Contact  amcgeever@woodlandsinterfaith.org  for any questions.

Rotary  House Is Making An Impact!

We are pleased to announce that our apartments are fully occupied with a waiting List. Over the last four months we have been 80% occupied. We are extremely excited to see so much interest in such  a short of time. To date, we have provided 204 days of lodging to patients undergoing extended treatment and their families at our Medical Center, This  represents over $30,000 in direct benefits to these patients and families. Our patients have included 9 infants and children plus two adult cancer patients. These patients have come from as far away as St Augustine, Fla.  and as near as Huntsville, Texas. We are currently evaluating our funding strategy to see if we can add a third apartment. What do you think?

We are also excited to announce our new web site where you can learn more www.rotaryhousetw.org

The Hospitality Committee could use more people to check in on our families and make sure they get the support they need to continue caring for their babies.  If you are interested in doing this and/or have an idea, contact Jon Sanderson at jon.sanderson@primelending.com.

Houston Botanic Garden
Today at lunch, we heard from Claudia Gee Vassar, President of the new Houston Botanic Garden. This new Garden is  under development on on 120 acres near Sims Bayou. The Garden will  eventually include plants from all over the world, including  a 2-acer community garden as well. On May 19, hosted its first community event with the creation of its tree farm. Eventually, over 1,100 trees will be planted on the rolling hills of this former golf course. The goals of this non-profit organization are to:
  • Provide an oasis of contemplation, learning, inspiration and research
  • Enrich people's lives through outstanding displays and programs
  • Serve as a  model for sustainability
  • Inspire people to become stewards of our environment
